3 IMPACTS OF ETHICAL THINKING

April 22, 2017

behno’s founder, Shivam Punjya, invited fashion photographer Dan Smith to MSA Ethos to explore "The behno Standard" and the less visible side of fashion. MSA Ethos is a garment factory located in Gujarat, India which is committed to incrementally implementing "The behno Standard". Smith captured some of the unique individuals of MSA Ethos through an emotional series of intimate portraits. The Garment Worker Project debuted at Sotheby's in New York City. All portraits are limited edition gallery framed and available for purchase. Proceeds go back to our non-profit partner MSA.

01/ HEALTH

Kalpana is a line leader at MSA Ethos, a powerful position many times fulfilled by men. In the river in the portrait’s background, a crocodile attacked Kalpana and her arm was torn into several pieces. Kalpana received critical surgery and healthcare at the hospital at MSA and was able to recover a fraction of her mobility. Coming from a family of means, working at MSA Ethos isn’t a necessity for her, but rather a passion of hers to find a career in which she’s stimulated and constantly learning. Her passion and desire to become an expert in an industry she loves, allowed her to overcome her fears and adversities.

02/ FAMILY PLANNING

03/ WORKERS SATISFACTION AND BENEFITS

Tara lives in a rented house not too far from MSA Ethos and has decided to be close to her workplace and only goes back to her home in the village once a month. Her children go to school at MSA’s Baxi Panch, a local school, and her elder son lives in the school’s hostel. Her husband, a security guard at MSA, fell sick and relied on her relationships with the management team at MSA Ethos to help navigate the healthcare system and also receive financial support. Through MSA Ethos, she is able to earn enough to sustain her household.
