LOOM TO LUXURY

VARANASI, INDIA

A homeworker economy hard at work.

IN NOVEMBER 2019, OUR FOUNDER, SHIVAM PUNJYA, VISITED LOOM TO LUXURY IN VARANASI, INDIA.

Varanasi, the spiritual capital of India, also grew to become an important epicenter for handwoven silk and fine muslin textiles. Loom to Luxury, a critical player in this world of weavers, facilitates a dialogue between a modernizing world and a heritage craft, where handweaving communities date back a millennia.

In Varanasi, Shivam met with artisans and their families in their creative, technical, and meticulous spaces as they kept alive certain traditional techniques over 500-years-old. He observed a bustling homeworker economy in these villages preserving a basic necessity with their hands – to clothe ourselves.

Loom to Luxury also has a significant partnership with NEST, a nonprofit organization building a new handworker economy to increase global workforce inclusivity, improve women’s wellbeing beyond factories, and safeguard important cultural traditions.

The second video expands on an evening aarti prayer and two scenes from his daily commute by boat, embracing the beauty travel by water offers this canal city.

With its spiritual depth, architecturally the city's planning also speaks to its beauty. The ghats of Varanasi are wide, spread out riverfront steps leading to the banks of the Ganges River where cultural events occur for various parts of a person's life. Every evening, a massively popularized tradition persists; thousands of individuals congregate for aarti, where everyone comes in on their boats for a communal prayer right on the banks of the Ganges.
