GULFAM HAS BEEN AN EMBROIDERY ARTIST HIS ENTIRE LIFE, WHERE LEARNING THE CRAFT WAS ALMOST HEREDITARY.

Embroidery has been practiced across generations of artisans for over 4000 years.

Gulfam’s Studio has about 40 artisans that work with him. Gulfam’s hand-embroidery and embellishment collective is nestled in Malad, a bustling borough of greater Mumbai. Since beginning our partnership with Gulfam in 2016 we have watched and cheered him on as his business grew enabling him to move into a larger space and hand down his vast knowledge to many new artisans.

“WORKING WITH ARTISAN COMMUNITIES PRESERVES INDIGENOUS CRAFT WHILE ALSO HAVING A DIRECT POSITIVE IMPACT ON LOCAL COMMUNITIES AND POVERTY REDUCTION.

COLLABORATION IS KEY

Our team spends a lot of time at Gulfam’s on our trips to India. Working hands on with the artisans allows us to open the door for real hands-on collaboration, an experience which our team has found to be incredibly valuable to the development of ideas as well as rewarding on a personal level. We are incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to learn, preserve, and re-introduce such historically rich techniques into our work straight from the communities that have been practicing this art for centuries.

WHY SOURCING LOCAL MATTERS

All our embroidery thread and embellishment materials are sourced from local markets within 20 kilometers of Gulfam’s Studio. Finding local materials allows us to support small businesses, build in-person relations, as well as reduce our carbon footprint from imports.
